Techniques

There are various attributes of karate that people learn. Here at Shao-lin Karate of Nicholasville, the students learn katas, short and long, sparring stances, and torites to test for belts.

SPARRING There are times when you spar against other people. Before the sparring starts the two opponents must bow to the main judge and to each other. The idea is to score the required amount of points before the other person does. A point is scored when someone is hit in the stomach, back, or on the top of the head. Hitting the face is not permitted. Of course, the opponents do not try to hurt one another. Once a point is scored the sparring is stopped and the judges tell which person they saw score. Usually, for lower belts, sparring goes to three points and to five points for upper belts.
